Sleep. It's the ultimate refresher and is essential to our survival, but are you and your family getting enough? Although we spend 33% of our lives asleep, we barely take notice... until we can't sleep. Then we think about it nonstop and would pay anything for a night of uninterrupted snoozing. May is Better Sleep Month and what better time to assess your families sleep habits and make changes?
Good sleep patterns are established from a very young age, so if you have young children in the house it's time to take a look at their nightly routines and institute change.
Problem: Your child is always too cold or too hot.
Solution: Temperature is a major issue when it comes to sleep. The ideal bedroom temperature for sleep is 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit, but seasonal conditions often come into play and can make a room too hold or cold. A few simple adjustments can make it possible for your child to sleep comfortably:
· Make sure all bedding in your child's crib is made of natural fabrics.
· Dress your child in a sleep sack made of merino, which has the natural ability to cool or insulate your child depending on the temperature. Unfortunately synthetic fabrics such as polyester can cause your child to overheat, and cotton offers little warmth, so merino is your best choice.
Problem: Your child's sleep schedule is inconsistent
Solution: Creating a consistent nighttime routine is essential for children, who on average need at least 9 hours of sleep per night. By establishing and sticking with a nightly pattern, you're giving your child the best chance to get to sleep sooner and sleep longer throughout the night. A typical nighttime routine for an under two is:
1. Dinnertime at a reasonable hour, preferably before 7pm
2. Bath or shower time. The warm water relaxes young children and signifies the end of the day. A couple of drops of lavender scented bath oil can be soothing and relaxing.
3. A short massage for babies under the age of one can be very relaxing. Again, lavender scented lotions or oils can assist.
4. Dress your child in his/her nighttime clothing. Sleep sacks are worn over your child's sleepwear and fabrics such merino or cotton are best for young children.
5. Story time with a bottle of warm milk (if necessary)
Problem: I'm a new parent and I need some sleep!
Solution: There's nothing more challenging than taking care of a new baby. The good news is, as babies grow older, they sleep for far longer periods at a time and soon will sleep through the night. In the meantime, know that erratic sleep schedules and getting up in the middle of the night will be part of your lives for the next few months. In saying that, establishing nightly routines and creating sleep associations such as dressing your child in a sleep sack can promote longer periods of uninterrupted sleep.
Problem: I'm not sure how long my child should be sleeping for.
Solution: Children need at least nine hours of sleep each night, and toddlers can be expected to take regular naps on top of this during the day. To help your kids get the sleep they need, make sure your child's bedroom is conducive to a good night's sleep - it should be cool, quiet and dark and he or she should be sleeping on a comfortable, supportive mattress, and preferably in a baby or toddler sized sleep sack.
Merino is a top choice for sleep fabrics since it can absorb up to 35% of it's own weight, compared to polyester which can be as low as 1%. Children that sleep in merino are less likely to overheat, meaning safer and better sleep for little ones.
Better Sleep Month isn't just for adults! There are several things you can do to promote healthy and safe sleep patterns for your children. Your child will never be too hot or cold when they wear a Merino Kids Baby or Toddler Sleep Bag, meaning better and longer sleep for both you and your little one.

Pregnancy - How Long Does It Last?
Even those of us who know nothing about pregnancy or women's issues know this to be true: Pregnancy lasts for 9 months. Well most human pregnancies do... right?
Not true! Pregnancy does not follow our modern western calender. Most gestations actually take 38 weeks to complete plus 2 weeks from the first day of your last period.
Of course each pregnancy and baby is unique, but for the majority 40 weeks or 240 days (from the first day of your last menstrual cycle) is the official length of pregnancy which is exactly 10 lunar months. Not 9 calendar months. So, the difference is very little. But it is important nonetheless.
Pregnancy and the 10 Moons
The journey from the potential of a new baby into the reality of same happens over 10 moons.
Another of the little reminders from nature that women, womanhood and our fertility are intimately connected to something much bigger...
This beautiful goddess of the night sky is telling us that we are part of a much greater story that is more mysterious and beautiful than perhaps we are aware. In doing so she helps us to detach from (what can become ) an obsession with dates, ovulation and menstruation and trust more that we are safe in the loving hands of the universe.
Pregnancy Success and the Law of Attraction
When you can feel this, your point of attraction changes so that you begin to see even more evidence that you do indeed belong to something much more magical. You are never alone on your journey into pregnancy success.

While the Stimulus package was moving through congress and being sold to the American public, the economy was shedding 700,000 + jobs a month
Two weeks into office, President Obama bludgeoned congress into passing the largest spending measure in history.
Using his glib speaking skills, he assured us that this program, with its "shovel ready" jobs, was precisely the fix, that would not only halt the job slide, and keep unemployment below 8%, but would create 3 1/2 million new jobs, thus it must be passed in just several days and enacted immediately.
Broken promises had begun on the president's second day in office on the abortion issue, and the pledge to hire no lobbyists; the next pledge to fall was the 5 day online review, before he would sign any major legislation.
This became broken promise number 3, because of its immediate cure factors-he and his silky smooth salesmen, proclaimed! So vital, was speed, that not even 1 of the 535 members of congress would have time to read this legislation, and none did, or even came close.
Joe Biden, David Axelrod, Robert Gibbs and other Democrat talking heads, who, at that time, railed against that 3 month loss, of nearly 2 million jobs, now proclaim, "we didn't know it was this bad."
Yes you did, Joe and David and Robert, you said so endlessly, at the time and like President Obama, assured us that the Stimulus was the precise cure for those very conditions.
Net Jobs Gained or Lost 16 Months After Each Initiative
2003 Bush Tax Cuts--Gained (plus) +1.4 Million
2009 Obama Stimulus--- Lost (minus) -2.6 Million
Excluding Temporary Census Bureau Workers Hired in 2009-2010, net jobs lost under The Obama stimulus have actually been 2.9 Million
Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) U.S. Dept. of Labor
The above figures include all monthly revisions through May of 2010 and the net figure of census workers, hired and laid off. The number hired was 564,000 minus 225,000 laid off in June.
Boasting About Slight Gains
All post-recession economies make gains on their own, as the economy sorts out excess inventories, reduced rents, home purchases, etc.
The average recession since WW2, lasted 10 months, this one has lasted 31 months. Seventeen months of this recession, have taken place under President Obama, with no end in sight
The Democrats Took Control Of Congress in December 2007
So now, after all the promises of the $862 billion behemoth, and despite all the downside data, 16 months later, in the most important areas, we get bragging for some sluggish GDP gains, that are under performing, past, post-recession numbers, by wide margins.
This amid more and more talk of a double-dip recession, from economists and even among many of the nation's highest profile businessmen, many of whom were at one time the president's most ardent supporters. Many of those same businessmen are also calling the president anti-business, as he continues his deceptive statements to the contrary.

2009 Obama Stimulus 9.5%
2003 Bush Tax Cuts 5.7%

Past, post-recession numbers have been not only been far better than these, the gains made, have come much sooner than these, without taking 1 penny of taxpayers' hard earned dollars. Claims that these present negative stats are less negative, than they were 16 months ago, is pathetic spin.
This proves one of two things. Either the administration didn't know what it was doing then, or it was intent on grabbing every dollar it could for redistribution, along with the enormous power it gives to government, and the votes it can buy.

Recession Started 11 Months After Democrats Took Control of Congress
Before the Democrats took control of congress the economy was soaring. It continued, almost to the moment Democrats submitted their first fiscal year budget, October 1, 2007.
The official beginning of the recession was December, 2007.
Before that, unemployment averaged less than 5%. Disposable income had improved by more than $3,000 for every man woman and child. 167,000 new jobs were created in the month before Democrats took control of congress, especially the HOUSE, from where all spending measures are authorized.
And then came Nancy and Harry and Barney and Chris!! Then Fannie and Freddie, which led to the housing collapse, which in turn led to the economic collapse!!
Now 16 full months after the promises and accompanying certainty, we have President Obama's comprehensive platform.
BLAME BUSH!!

It is probably like a million times that you have been told by health care professionals that exclusive breast feeding until six months is absolutely essential. You have probably been very religiously doing so even in the middle of the night. If you chose not to or you were not able to do so, you were possibly reminding yourself to sterilise the bottle and keep the water ready. Either way, you are on your feet. Suddenly there comes a day when your baby, who in all these days has been glaring at your plate, pounces on your plate and grabs a handful. Yippee! He is ready for solids! Well, that's how simple baby led weaning is and from my personal experience I would vouch for it. For one thing, this way you are not in a rush to introduce solids and run the risk of food allergies. Moreover, the jury on when is the right time to wean your baby on solids is almost always out in the open. So why not just leave it to nature and let your baby decide when he wants to eat and not just drink. Just remember, like adults, each baby is different and develop according to their own timetable and not yours. It is much easier to feed the baby food when he is ready and it is less stressful for you. It is said that unless the 'tongue thrust reflex' goes i.e. reflex that makes them push everything out of their mouth, they may not be ready for solids. Also, generally they are ready when they can sit up unsupported.
My son started showing interest in food when he was about five months and when he was two weeks short of six months, I started offering him solids or semi solids to be more precise. The health visitors said the target should be to enable him have family meals by his first birthday. Being target oriented was quite helpful in planning my strategy. I am going to share some of my wisdom and experience with you.
As a first time mother I wanted to be perfect in what I did for him. I used to refer so many different websites and books on weaning, what to give and what not to give. If you were to go by most of them, there was no way I could even think of achieving my target. Based on all that here are the key things I did or think or feel and may help you...
1. Try to stick to the four day rule especially if there is history of food allergy in your family. What this means is, if you introduce potato to your baby, do so for four continuous days and do not give any other new food in the same time. This will help you observe any allergies as sometimes it takes a couple of days for the allergy to show up. If you give too many new things, it makes it hard to find the allergen.
2. Do not be overly concerned by how much your baby is eating. It is said that the nutrient requirements for the first year of life is from milk and food is more inculcation of habit. Remember, try not to reduce the quantity of milk to make your baby eat more at least until one year old
3. There are always days when they will just refuse to eat and there are also days when they will gobble anything
4. As your child grows, he develops the ability to chew food better. This means you should vary the texture of food. Start with purees then move to mashed and then to chunks. Call me lazy but I did not puree any vegetables except peas and beans. All the rest I would boil/steam and make a pulp by mashing with a spoon. I use to mash every mouthful of banana in my hand and feed him.
5. Introduce spices slowly. Most spices, especially the ones used in Indian cuisine, are beneficial to the body. Cumin for example, helps relieve congestion and also aids in digestion.
6. Unlike adults, fat is good for babies especially for their rapid brain development. Use ghee, butter, oil in moderation. Give full fat yogurt, cheese etc.
7. Usually after the 26 weeks mark, you are given green signal to give almost any food like fruits, veggies, meat (we are vegetarians though). Of course it is up to you to keep allergies in mind.
8. Start with one meal a day at a time when he is not very tired or sleepy or cranky. Do not rush and do not get distracted. Try explaining what he is eating, what the benefits are, how it was prepared. This way, both of you are focused on the food. You eat a spoonful in front of him and say things like 'yum yum'. Gradually increase the meal to two and then to three.
9. Variety adds spice to life, even your little one's life. Try to add as much variety of flavours, veggies, fruits etc.
10. Some say that as babies naturally have a sweet tooth because we are born with more taste buds for sweets, it may be a good idea to introduce vegetables first else they may never like them. I did not face this problem and was almost alternating new veggies and fruits. For the same reason I never added any sugar in his diet. However I add a dash of salt. They say their kidneys are not fully developed and hence avoid salt and sugar. There is no point in adding no salt and handing a bag of chips when he is a toddler as that will only make him want chips more and harm the body. I want him to develop liking for balanced diet.
11. Try not to give a lot of jar food. Processed food is not good for adults, leave alone for babies. It also becomes hard to wean them off from those foods and eat homemade food. I used to buy few jars for travel and emergency. Also, I used to try vegetable or fruit for the first time from a jar, look for allergies and then prepare them at home.
12. Your baby is your best guide. Do not panic and do not get frustrated, they will easily pick that
13. You cannot expect your baby/toddler to snack on a fruit when you are snacking on crisps. Lead by example.
As I said, I have shared most of my lessons learned here and hopefully this will be a good starting point for you. It is a long journey, not always a fun ride, but eventually you will get there. Remember, your goal is to give a good healthy start for your child. His quality of life, health and longevity is quite heavily dependent on how well you set his eating habits. Childhood obesity is on the rise everywhere and there is also said to be increasing rates of juvenile diabetes. You can help your child, so let's do it.
I am not here to just give advice, I also intend to share some baby and toddler recipes on my food blog http://tastefullyveggie.blogspot.com

As the baby enters the second month of development, he or she may begin to express feelings through cooing, gurgling, squealing, laughing, grunting, or humming. The baby might even flash his or her first smile by the time he or she reaches five weeks old.
The baby will begin to spend more time awake during the day. This is the perfect time to start stimulating sensory development. Music is a great way to engage the infant. Any type of music will do, although many parents prefer classical tunes or lullabies. When the baby is quiet and alert, parents can interact by talking to their infant about the things around them, such as pictures on the wall.
For some parents, the second month of the baby's development can mean mixed emotions. Some new parents might feel disappointed that life with their newborn is not how they had imagined it to be. These feelings are perfectly normal and nothing to be ashamed of. Many new mothers also have a lack of desire for sex due to hormone fluctuations; this too is normal. Other mothers who choose not to breastfeed may feel guilt and shame over their decision.
During the second month, mothers will also return to their doctors for a postpartum checkup. This visit will include a pelvic exam as well as a breast exam. Some women will also receive a Pap smear at this time. It is important to make sure that the mother's body is healing properly so that she can continue her job as a new mother.

My baby can read, seems to be a common theme, from daytime television shows to websites selling the ultimate learning system - this has easily become the scope of the market for parents wanting their children to learn reading at nine months old. In "The Ellen Show", there was a feature where a 5-year old kid was shown to be reading at 13 months old. At five years old, he can already read an entire page of a book clearly and with hardly any effort.
When you go online, you will see dozens of "Get my baby to read at 9 months old!" systems which include DVDs, books and other learning materials that parent can use to teach their kids how to read. The principle is that instead of waiting for your kids to reach five or six years old, they can already have a head start with their reading skills as parents spend the time teaching their infants.
Proof Positive that Your Child Can Learn to Read at 9-Months Old
To give you an idea about why today's parents are keener on teaching their babies how to read, here are a few interesting facts about a child's development:
- Between three months to five years, about 90% of a child's brain is in its development stage.
- At this age, a child's mind has the ability to process, store and absorb information like a sponge.
- Even if your child cannot yet articulate the words, he or she can use bodily movements to recognize that a word is read and understood. For example, when getting your nine-month-old daughter to read the word 'nose', she may not be able to utter the word yet but she can point to that part of her body.
- Instead of getting your child to succumb to the pressure of learning in school to keep up with kids of the same age, you can give your child the advantage by teaching him or her how to read during the infancy stage.
Additional Information on Getting Your Baby to Read
Now that you already have an idea about just how pliable a child's mind is that you can get your baby to read starting from when he or she is several months old, what other things can you do on your end as a parent? If you want to shock other parents with the fact that your child can read at nine months, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind before you can claim, "my baby can read."
First, instead of purchasing an expensive DVD or learning set, what you can do is to allot some time out of your busy schedule to actually get your baby to read. Use visually effective tools such as flashcards, or a simple paper and marker.
When you show a clearly written word to your baby, make sure to pronounce the word clearly and demonstrate what it means. For example, you can write the word yes, pronounce it and nod your head as a demonstration of what the word actually means.
You can do this in combination with other methods to get your nine-month old baby to read. Remember that kids have a short attention span, so it's best to spend only about an hour or so for the 'reading lessons', although you can do it on a daily basis.
There are many great programs out that will really take you by the hand and give you the guidance you'll need. Dr. Titzer's Your Baby Can Read! has a great program with easy to follow steps that will literately walk you through everything you'll need.
As a parent, it is up to you to take full advantage of the developmental stage in your child's life. With some knowledge, understanding, time and your love to your kids as a parent, you can get your baby to read in an age as early as 9-months-old, I know because my baby can read.

After nine long months of joyful anticipation, hours of labor and a couple of pushes, your baby is finally here! Your first reaction may be a mixture of joy and surprise as you focus on the wet, pasted look on his face. You remind yourself that this marks a new life for you and your husband.
PARENTHOOD FOR THE FIRST TIME
For both Mommy and Daddy, the first few weeks of baby's stay at home may be a period of learning together. Always remember that you are not only parents but partners as well. Therefore, both sides require full cooperation. When my husband and I were new parents, doing things alternately for baby was a big help. I would look after him tonight, feed him and change his diapers. Then tomorrow, my husband would do the same thing so I could take a night off. If things start to heat up, ask someone to baby-sit for you. Remember, you are not only a mother or a father, but a wife and a husband as well. Don't feel guilty about going out and sometimes leaving your baby. These 'breaks' are healthy for your marriage.
WATCH BABY GROW!
The joys of watching your baby grow up into a healthy little boy or girl is priceless. Do not worry if baby seems to be developing at a rate different from that of his brothers or sisters. Remember, baby is an individual and when it comes to growth and development, all babies are different. However, there are basic general characteristics that all babies share.
During the first five months, your baby starts to coo repeatedly and make gurgling sounds. You would usually hear a 'goo-goo' sound from him while he watches faces and moving objects intently. By this time, his sense of sight has started to develop. Your baby may reach for things and take it with his hands. He might even turn his head and smile at the people he recognizes.
For baby's 6-12 months' growth, he starts to babble. He also responds to your voice and to new sounds as well. In this way, it is obvious that he pays increasing attention to speech. Your baby might even try to imitate words such as "mama" and "dada". Baby also starts to crawl forward on his belly and creeps on his hands and knees. He tries different positions from sitting to crawling to lying on his stomach. He can also pull himself to stand and walk by holding on to furniture. Make sure that nothing sharp or anything harmful is in his way as he might walk two or three steps without support.
Looking back from the day your baby was born to the time that he starts to walk and talk, it is clear that he has made a huge development. As you face more childhood years of your baby, the best thing to do now is to provide him with the right nutrition as well as encouragement and a supportive environment. Before you know it, he'll be going to school and all your hard work has paid off.

If you have a new baby, congratulations! A new baby is an exciting addition to the family. Over the next few months you'll be amazed to see how your baby begins to develop from that newborn you first took home. Here's a look at the first twelve months and the development you can expect through each month as your baby gets older.
Newborn - 1 Month
During the first month of life, your baby does a lot of developing. The muscles in the neck are starting to get a bit strong, which may allow your baby to pull her head up for a few seconds. Baby also begins to realise that she has hands and feet and may move them around showing that she's exploring her body and how it works.
1-2 Months
Now your baby is beginning to gurgle and coo and you may even see that first smile from your baby during this time - one of the big milestones you'll remember when you have a baby. Babies usually start sleeping a bit longer at a stretch at this stage of developments. Your baby's movements are becoming a bit more coordinated as well.
2-3 Months
As your baby approaches the three month mark, she's beginning to lift her head more and more. Leg, arm, and hand coordination is getting better and you'll notice your baby kicking and waving more than before, especially as her joints are more flexible. At this point she'll be attached to you and will be able to recognize her mother and father.
3-4 Months
By this point, your baby will eat more at one time, making feedings less frequent. She now has a larger stomach. Babies also begin to try to roll over at this stage in the game.
4-5 Months
At this stage development is really going fast. Babies can lift their head and shoulders and may even try to sit up, although they have to have support to do so. Your baby will be able to bring things to her mouth as well. She may be able to make sounds that she hears as well.
5-6 Months
Babies do a lot of exploration with their hands at this point. They start grabbing objects and discover the art of dropping things. Usually babies are able to roll in both directions by this age, which means you'll need to be careful when changing them. Babies become more social at this age as well.
6-7 Months
Motor skills are really showing up now. Usually, your baby can pick things up one handed and may even be able to clasp her hands as well. Often, babies this age enjoy the sounds of banging toys together. Teething may be happening at this point too.
7-8 Months
By now, your baby can sit pretty well and probably doesn't need much support. Crawling often occurs at this time and your baby may even try standing with some help. Babies are more emotional at this stage.
8-9 Months
Babies of this age are more mobile. While they may not be walking, they can get around fairly well by crawling. With some help babies can take some steps. During this month and the next couple of months, separation anxiety can be a real difficulty for babies.
9-10 Months
Your baby is finding that he can do more things with his fingers since he is more agile at this age. Often, babies can pick up objects with their fingers and they enjoy tasting things. You really will begin to see the personality of your baby emerge.
10-11 Months
Babies are getting closer to walking at this age and they are becoming more independent as well. They try walking while holding on to furniture and can often hold a cup to drink on their own. Your baby will enjoy going through the pages of books at this stage.
11-12 Months
As your child reaches the year mark, so many things are happening. Often, they take their first steps on their own. Babies of this age enjoy throwing and pushing things around. Sometimes babies don't like to take their naps at this age because of their growing feelings of independence.
Of course, as you look through these stages, remember that every baby is different. Each baby develops in their own time so if your baby is ahead or behind, it's probably nothing to worry about.

So you're thinking about entering your bundle of joy into a free baby photography contest? I can't say I blame you. It's fun, a great way to show off your cutie pie, and as an added benefit you can win some serious cash too.
Here are my three favorite poses (and they are easy too) to get super cute baby pictures every time.
Pose #1
The first pose is the baby eating pose. This pose works well no matter what the baby is eating. Bottle poses come across as being sweet, while food all over the face poses come across as being a little more silly and cute. Either way it can work. The key to getting these poses is simple. Just have your camera ready at dinner time and voila you have cute pictures.
Pose #2
Baby with fingers in mouth. This is a great pose, and really easy to get, because your baby will do this naturally all by himself. It will also score big points in a baby photography contest for sheer cuteness.
One thing to remember when getting this type of picture is to make sure that baby's hands are not covering her face. Another thing that will help to greatly increase the cuteness factor of this picture is to catch him smiling around his fingers. Adorable.
Pose #3
The big personality pose. All babies have cute things that they do. When you capture this with your camera, it's called the big personality pose. The key here is to showcase your baby doing what he does best, playing in bubbles, laughing her head off, playing patty cake, or even pulling the cat's tail.
There are two things to remember when it comes to this type of pose. First, silly pictures are often contest winning pictures and happy babies will win a baby photo competition hands down over other types of pictures.
Where to find cute baby photography contests

What is your main consideration when you are searching for gifts for a newborn baby or an infant
When we are hunting for gift ideas for babies and infants, one of the main consideration is to get a gift that can stimulate the baby's development of the brain or his co-ordination of reflexes, and thus help him in the development of his 5 senses as a baby.
Here are some ideas that are helpful:
1. Give the baby a gift of "mobiles". Mobiles refers to those toys that you can dangle or hang from the ceiling or attached to a cot. There are two predominant choice of colors for these mobile toys. You can either choose a combination of colors to stimulate the brain or you can decide on a black and white theme which has been found to provide opportunities for the baby to learn how to contrast shapes. Adding some ribbons that move when blown by the wind is also an excellent idea, and will look colorful and inviting to the baby. It is important that the mobile be out of reach of the baby though.
2. Provide an activity center or activity gym for the baby during floor time. Activity centers do cost money but they can be used for a longer period of time and until the baby becomes a toddler. Select an activity center that allows you to add your own material toys and to add on to it. Activity centers and gyms encourage the development of baby's motor reflexes and coordination,
3. Mirrors- Get a plastic mirror for safety, and not glass mirror. Your baby will be greatly entertained to see his own image, and his own movements.
4. Books - When choosing books for babies and infants, choose those that have simple pictures with very little or even no words. If you are making your own books, you can make a book of your family tree or with photographs of the brother or sister or the aunt or uncle who lives far away or overseas. You can provide information on them when talking to your baby and showing him the photographs.
You can also make a texture book. A texture book will contain cut ups of different materials that can be kept in a scrapbook for your baby to feel and learn the different textures and shapes.
Give gifts that are useful and enjoy the laughter of the babies when they play with those gifts!
