Junior should really start interacting with objects now that he's learning these things. For instance, during feedings, he may reach for the spoon. By now, he's associated the spoon with food, and he knows it goes into his mouth - something he is skilled at accomplishing. This gives you ways to interact with him during feedings, too. Talk with your child and bond during feedings. Let him help feed himself; don't make him do all of the work, though. All of these things will help him grow.

2 Month Babies

By now, you are probably sick of picking up things he's knocked over, but let this play continue. Now that he knows things fall over when he drops them, he may look for them on the ground. For example, if he pushes the spoon off of the table, he'll look for it on the floor. This shows that he's learned what gravity does. So, even though picking things up isn't fun for you, it's a great game for him.

Mirrors will be particularly fun during this time period. Since your child has started identifying objects, like the spoon, he's at the point where he can start identifying himself. He will start to recognize that he's looking at himself in a mirror. This revelation is huge for a child. Let your baby play with the mirror - with your supervision, of course - so he can really figure things out.

The final big development in month nine is your child's ability to sit up. By the end of this month, he should be able to roll over completely and push himself into a sitting position, even if he starts out on his stomach. Enjoy this lull while you can. He's not walking yet, but this is a sign that he'll be starting to soon.

Healthy newborns can typically do the following at birth or within the first few weeks of their life:

2 Month Babies

1. See things 8-12 inches away (the distance from breast or milk bottle to mom's or dad's face).

2. Can hear and may move their heads and eyes towards something of interest, or move their heads if their breathing is blocked (but sometimes not enough to avert suffocation).

3. Can identify their parents' voices.

4. Can taste and smell and have shown preferences for their own mother's milk and dislikes for strong, nasty odors.

5. Can draw back when pinched or pricked.

6. Can yawn and sneeze.

7. Have a "startle reflex," in which the arms and legs may shoot out or their body may stiffen when startled by a loud noise or other stimulation.

8. Have a "rooting reflex," in which touching the baby's lips gets him or her to open its mouth for feeding, perhaps smacking lips, sucking and breathing eagerly.

9. Have a protective reflex in which their tongues thrust out any item in their mouths (such as pacifiers). This reflex is intended to guard them against choking.

10. Have a "stepping reflex" if held upright and a "crawling reflex," in which they seem to sort-of crawl when placed on their stomach.

11. Have a "grasping reflex," in which they squeeze their little hands around a finger or other object.

12. Have a "righting reflex," in which when pulled up by the arms, they can lift their head up, despite a floppy neck.

13. Get a big kick out of faces, their own or other people's, and may be able to mimic expressions a few days after birth.

14. Favor the contrast of black-and-white patterns, especially the edges and in the shapes of bulls-eyes, diagonal stripes, faces or checkerboards.

Having listed the amazing things newborns can do, it is usually too much to expect of babies one month or younger to do everything. These are the things they cannot do, and when to expect them:

1. Smile intentionally (this takes about six weeks, although parents often swear it's sooner).

2. See very far away (you'll observe as baby's eyes begin to focus further away).

3. Lift head up (perhaps a bit by end of month, but little neck control yet).

4. Sit unaided when put down in sitting position (at about 5-6 months age).

5. Eat any solids, and will choke if given them (feeding solids sometimes starts at about 4 or 5 months).

6. Drool (drooling may start at about 3 months).

7. Have teeth (rarely a newborn is born with a tooth, but most infants get first teeth at 4-12 months).

8. Grip, pick up or grab objects (by 6 months, however, you may be wishing for a baby straitjacket at the grocery store).

9. Beg, whine and cry for heavily advertised toys.

10. Watch TV.

Now, I know that the process of baby gender selection can seem like it might be very complicated, but it is actually quite simple when you know exactly what it is you are trying to do. When you are trying to choose the gender of your baby, what you are actually doing is choosing the sperm you want to fertilize your egg. What is the best time to have a boy or a girl?

OK, now remember what I said about girl sperm being slow, but steady and boy sperm being quick and short lived, well this information is important to know during the baby gender selection process because it will dictate when you should be trying to conceive.

If you are trying to have a boy, you will want to try and conceive as close to your ovulation time as possible, remember these little guys don't live very long, so you want to give them a fighting chance for as many of them to get to your egg as possible.

If you are trying to have a girl you should try and conceive around 3 days before you ovulate because the girl sperm will still be alive and kicking when you ovulate, while the boy sperm will have died off. If you don't know how to tell when you ovulate, I recommend an over the counter ovulation test for ease and reliability.

OK, again we have to remember the aforementioned characteristics of each sperm. If you want to conceive a boy you need to give these vulnerable little guys a straight shot to the egg, you want them to be as close to the egg as you can get them during the conception process. To achieve this, use deep penetration positioning the sperm to eject at the base of the cervix.

If you are trying for a girl, you will want to use shallow positions that leave the sperm far away from the egg. The long lived girl sperm will make the trip and the fast boy sperm will die off before the end of the journey.

One Final Tip: The Vaginal Environment:

OK, so now we have these two chromosomal sperm that are getting ready for a race to the egg; the quick yet vulnerable boy sperm and the slow moving but strong willed girl sperm. Now, depending on which racer you're rootin' for, you have the ability to create the perfect environment to house the sperm you want to win.

If you have your hopes set on a girl then you will want to go for a highly acidic environment. The acidic environment will kill off the boy sperm. If you want a boy then you will want to have a very alkalized vaginal area creating a less harsh environment for your boy sperm to live in.

To make things even simpler, you can actually test the acidity of your vaginal area using pH strips that can be purchased at a health food store. This result will tell you how much work you have ahead of you to change that environment. Depending on the gender you are shooting for you can change your acidity levels by either eating very acidic foods or staying on an alkaline based diet.

2. Baby toys meant for newborns to 6 months old. Be careful where these come from. Babies put things in their mouths. The last thing you might want is to have them put something covered with paint that contains lead or other toxic materials into their mouths.

3. Photo albums or photo frames. Photos store memories of baby's early years. Or better yet, get parents a new camera.

The first month we woke up every hour on the hour to give her her feeding and to change her.
